Shared Ministry Position Description
Position: Altar Server
Purpose of Position: Provide detailed assistance to priest/deacon during Mass.
Responsibilities:
- Be present on scheduled date and secure an appropriate substitute when unavailable to meet commitment for that date.
- Help prepare sanctuary prior to Mass (lighting candles, placing worship aides on chairs, etc.)
- Process in/out during the liturgy; sometimes called upon to carry the processional cross or prayer books.
- Assist priest/deacon during Mass with the following: book of prayers (sacramentary); receiving of collection/gifts from congregation; setting the altar for Eucharist; carrying water/vessels from credence table to altar; removing the vessels following Eucharist; etc.
- Model excellent participation during Mass to congregation (appropriate clothing, proper posture, singing, etc.).
Qualifications:
- Must have received the Sacrament of Eucharist and be at least 10 years old.
- Understanding or willingness to learn well the order of the Mass.
- Ability to anticipate the needs of the priest /deacon during Mass
- Ability to show reverence; participate as appropriate during liturgy.
- An awareness of how things are to be handled (books, candles, vessels, crosses, etc.) and an ability to do so.
Amount of time required: 1 ½ hours per assigned Mass (15 minutes prior to start and 15 minutes after Mass). Scheduled to serve approximately once per month.
When ministry is performed: Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings.
Length of Commitment: One year (July-June)
Training provided: Initial training provided; ongoing mentoring as needed.
