At St. Katharine Drexel, we welcome our youngest members into the Christian faith as a community and celebrate Baptisms during weekend Masses.
Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments, and the "door" that gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sin because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. Baptism is considered a sacrament of initiation by which a believer receives the remission of original and personal sin, begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit, and is incorporated into the Church, the body of Christ.
The rite of baptism consists of pouring water on the head while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers information about baptism in sections 977, 1213, 1275, 1278.
To begin preparations for your child’s baptism, call the parish office to set up an informational meeting. Please keep in mind, membership is required for baptism, either at St. Katharine Drexel or another parish. (If a family is from another parish, we must have a recommendation letter from that parish pastor).
Older children and adults interested in Baptism, please see our RCIA page.
