We have restored the option of receiving Communion from the Chalice, as a number of other parishes have. As always, this is an option for the Catholic, not a requirement. While the Church teaches that receiving Communion under one form is fully acceptable in the encounter with Christ—to receive also from the Chalice the Sacred Blood of Jesus is an even more full sign of the Eucharist, as Saint Paul taught the Corinthians in his first letter, 11:26, “(A)s often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.”
A few careful notes:
- Because of the concern of passing hand contamination into the cup, the Church does not practice intinction—the communicant dipping the Body into the Precious Blood.
- If a believer is sick, consider please not receiving from the common chalice until you are well.
